An Epic Fantasy with an Unwitting Hero

In celebration of my friend and fellow author Chris Patterson's new boxset launch of the popular fantasy trilogy, Shadow Fires, I have read and reviewed book 1: A Chance Beginning. Enjoy!

epic fantasy novel

This is a story about Erik Eleodum, a young man who enjoys his simple life on his family's homestead. However, his life changes drastically when he is unwittingly thrown into a journey to become a warrior by his brothers, who desire status, fame, and fortune.

As they embark on this hero quest and leave their simple farmstead, they quickly realize the world is full of treachery, deceit, and plenty of danger. Because of this, a large part of the story is centered on Erik's struggle to find faith in this incredibly brutal world.

There is lots of great action - complete with thieves, dwarves, assassins, and black magic! I was kept on my toes the entire time wondering if Erik would even survive to claim any fame or riches.

The characters are also relatable. One of my favorites is the dwarf who affectionately takes on the role of Erik’s spiritual leader.

The narrator for this series of audio books is the same narrator who performed Of Princes and Dragons book 2 in the Lords and Commoners series (available 8-23-21). He has a great voice! There is something about a deep British accent that is incredibly sexy. Great work Amrit Sandhu!

Heat level: Mild. There are no descriptive sex scenes. Note: there are numerous references to rape and prostitution.
